The Labyrinth
The Catacombs, Elevation: -9.1m

General comments:

Visiting the Labyrinth can be decidedly frustrating until you learn its secret. While the level changes every time you visit there is always a ladder in each of the four corners (see map). When you come down from "Beware of Low-Flying Nightmares" you are in the top right-hand corner of the map. The top left-hand corner contains the ladder going down to "Happy Happy, Carnage Carnage". The bottom right-hand corner ladder goes down to "Lasciate Ogne Speranza, Voi Ch'Intrate", while the remaining ladder takes you down to "Need a Light?".

There is also a Violet Crystal at the centre. Not easy to find but an important item as you'll discover later. It's also worth two points.

To further complicate matters the level contains numerous floating Spheres. Let them get too close and the experience can be electrifying. They move fast and have a habit of sneaking up behind you. While they don't do much damage they are persistent and a group of them can whittle down you health points in no time. You might be lucky and find a safe spot to rest but don't rely on it. If you happen to die in the Labyrinth you'll find that the Spheres are, as you would expect, electrical.

The Official Hint Book offers a useful tip for minimizing the damage a Sphere will do when it attacks you from behind:

When a Sphere attacks you from behind, turn halfway towards the Sphere, then use the "look" function (shift + turn key) to instantaneously turn the rest of the way ("looking" left 90 degrees is a lot faster than turning left 90 degrees).

Items to find:

Violet Crystal (two points)

Points to note:

When you pick up the Violet Crystal your total points will increase to 25 which in turn increases your health from 16 to 18.

The electrical spheres are called Shocking Spheres. Hopper <hopper@whpress.com> writes:

The "Shocking Sphere" name is given in STR# 2001. These strings might be used for the "You see a dead ..." messages, but of course the Spheres don't leave corpses.

Here's the string list Hopper refers too.

Nightmare Headless Phantasm Ghoul Zombie Ooze Invisible Wraith Shocking Sphere Skitter Sentinel Ghast Stalker Greater Nightmare Venemous Skitter

Interestingly, the Official Hint Book simply refers to them as Spheres.

Ron Hunsinger <listreply1@erstesoft.com> writes:

Every time you enter the Labyrinth, the game completely erases and rebuilds the level. It always starts with an empty cell right in the center, at (16,16), and grows the maze randomly from there. It then puts a Violet Crystal in that center cell, but only if you've never picked one up. It doesn't want you returning here to get more Violet Crystals.

Tip: if you want to dispose of garbage, like Nazi propaganda or overproduced ammo, Labyrinth is a good dumping ground. When you leave, anything you've left behind on the ground is gone forever.

The reason you may want to get rid of junk is to make more room for corpses. There's a hard limit of 500 items per level, including corpses, mushrooms, dropped items, living critters, bullets, et al. The +1 bonus per 250 kills means you want plenty of room for corpses.

Monsters to kill:

Shocking Spheres

Decision to make:
