Not if you have a certain box it doesn't.

By the way, I have heard people say if you wear the gas mask the purple
monster can't hurt you, but my experience was that I took the same amount of
damage whether or not I had the gas mask on. Anyone else have this problem.
I also had a sound glitch where the sounds would go haywire for about 3 to 5
seconds. This was on a IIci 5/80 with no extensions.

I tried getting past the purple monster several times. I agree with your
observation that the gask mask did not reduce the damage I took.

I have a question about the Easter egg. I am avoiding going through the
transporters by activating the Easter egg. Has anyone else tried this, and
will it cause any problems in fighting the roomfull of monsters or in winning
the game? Also, is there any way to rest between the rooms?

That was my experience, too. But maybe I was actually losing health to
earthquakes. I've been meaning to go back and experiment, but haven't
done so yet.

If the gas mask really works against him, that suggests an alternate
strategy. Perhaps you could, while wearing the mask, lure him into
the room with the save rune. Then, when you zip through the door,
it would slam shut behind you, locking him in. Then you could deal
with the Ghasts without any distraction from him. Maybe then you wouldn't
need to use the Violet Crystal against the Ghasts. I would surely love to
have a fresher crystal later. As it is, my violet crystal has slowed down
enough that I can't get past the room full of Banshees without using one
of my red potions to speed it up.
