This problem crops up in two places in PiD at least. Some posters have
recommended avoidance strategies for dealing with the Blue Meanie and with
the Purple Belcher. With the Purple Belcher, the suggestion was to lure
the Belcher into the SaveRune room with the Pipes, and then evade it
somehow and slip past it, locking it into the room. The problem is that I
seem to be unable to slip around it. Am I missing something?

Another poster has suggested imploying a similar strategy against the Blue
Meanie, using the blue Crystal to "freeze" it and then slip around it.
Again, I don't see any place where this would be possible. None of the
corridors or pillared rooms are wide enough.

Thanks for any info.

I slip around the Purple Belcher, but it ain't easy. Some tips:

  1) Get rid of as many Ghasts as you can, first. Even go so far as
to step half-way through the door to make sure there aren't any
at least as far as around the corner where the Purple Meanie is
     waiting.

  2) Get well rested. He's going to do a lot of damage before you get
     around him.

  3) Blow the alien pipes to make him come. Unfortunately, a few Ghasts
will come with him. Wait in a back corner for him. Do not center
yourself against the back wall (the one with the closed door in it).
If you do, he will pin you against the door, and you won't be able
to get out because you'll get caught up on the edges of the doorway.
Besides, you don't want him in the center of the room. You want
to lead him off-center as much as you can.

  4) Concentrate first on the Ghasts. Even though they're further back,
they can do much more damage.

  5) Once the Ghasts are disposed of, slide to the other back corner
using the dodge keys. Try to go around him on that side. If you're
lucky, you'll get around right away. Usually, you get sort-of stuck
anyway. Turn towards him and try to dodge around him. If that
doesn't work, turn towards the door again and try going forward.
Keep alternating. Eventually, you will work your way free.

  6) If you don't get through, try again. You did save, right? You
were standing right on a save rune. It usually takes a few tries.

  7) Once you do get through, don't spend too much time lamenting the
damage you have taken. It will be severe, but there will be more
Ghasts to attend to. Fortunately, it is pretty easy to avoid
taking any more damage from them. And once they're all gone, you
will have the distinct pleasure of wandering alone through that
vast, silent, cavern. (Well, it seems like that, by contrast with
the previous hustle and bustle.) Enjoy the sensation. The
     Venemous Skitters are coming...
